He was the Minister of Transportation up on till May 16th 2022, when he resigned to contest for Nigeria's presidency under the ruling APC [All Progressive Congress] Party. He previously served in oil-rich Rivers State as Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007. On April 9, 2022, Amaechi declared interest to contest in the Presidential election in 2023.
